Whenever possible, I work with Regenerative Economics principles.
A Regenerative Economy is an economic system that continue to regenerate and supports regeneration. There are many possible practices of Regenerative Economics.
We have been practicing barter economics and gift economics for years. The transformation from barter system to gift system has been a challenge and great blessing. In gift economy we focus on love, appreciation and the joy of giving. This practice is based on a Buddhist practice, called Dana, or free giving. The foundation is giving without expecting to receive. The practice is being unattached from a transaction.
In the last year, we have begun to deepen the practice into Reciprocity or Reciprocal Economy. This work is inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer and her teachings from the book “Braiding Sweetgrass”. Reciprocity practice focuses on relationship and mutual support. It is about honoring the gift of the other being, not the gift of what’s exchanged.
In reciprocity practice I am able to more directly see how my gifts support the being, often person, who I love. This practice translates into animals, plants, ecosystems and the whole Earth. I give not (only) because it brings me to joy to give, but also because I have a responsibility in a community, in an ecosystem, to support my fellow beings. And I know that supporting them means supporting the whole, and through the whole, myself.
All of these practices may flow together. I can barter with joy and reciprocity. But for me, I prefer to focus on dana and reciprocity. Sometimes I have a use for a more straightforward transaction with money or barter.
One of the biggest lessons for me in my journey with Sacred, Regenerative Economics is to accept where I am at. And that often deep lessons (and abundance) follow a period of difficult practice.
